This is because they may have done something not so great when they were much younger that they think might come back to haunt them. Every position and every company has different feelings on what is considered acceptable and what is not. That is usually defined by the job at hand and what your direct responsibilities are going to be.

This check is directly influenced by the importance and caliber of the job you are about to apply for. So, basically, the background checks completely depends upon the job you are about to apply. Like for instance, if you are applying for a teacher's position, then the background check may be only for last five years whereas if you are applying for a server in the hotel, then it could be somewhere around two to five years. Every company and the every position require various rounds of background checks. What can be accepted also depends upon the category of the post you have applied for and what kind of responsibilities you are undertaking.
