How Many Years Does a Background Check Go Back?

The first thought on many people's minds when they find out they are going to have a background check is how many years a background check goes back. This is because they may have done something not so great when they were much younger that they think might come back to haunt them. In fact, it is pretty common for people who are now responsible adults to have something on their background check to be worried about. Thankfully, most people can rest easy and know that things you did as a crazy teenager probably won't harm you as an adult.

In response to how many years a background check goes back, most employers only go back typically about five to seven years, although in some cases depending on the job, they can go back further. So, if you are in your 30's or 40's things that you did as a young adult probably won't hinder your employment with a company, as long as they weren't major felonies or something that would affect the job performance now. However, if you have something that happened in the past five to seven years then it can affect whether or not you are employed.

In some cases, such as if you were applying for a job with the IRS or any federal or state agency, many times background checks can go back as far as twelve years, or even more. It is in direct relation to how important or how classified the job is. So, if you are trying to get a job at a restaurant as a server, the time difference in how far the background checks go back are going to be considerably different than if you are applying for a job as a teacher with young children.

Every position and every company has different feelings on what is considered acceptable and what is not. That is usually defined by the job at hand and what your direct responsibilities are going to be.

Whenever you think about the background check the first thought that crosses our minds is how many years back does the background check goes!! And the reason being, in your younger days, you weren't that thoughtful and now is coming back to irk you. However, it is now common for every adult to be stressed about background check. Thanks to the new ways, most of us can be rest assured that the notorious things we must have done in our younger years wouldn't retaliate back.

Now the answer to how many years does a background check goes back depends upon the employees which mostly think it is about five to seven years but sometimes it can even go back further if you have started working earlier. So if you are in your 30's and 40's, you are still safe especially if you have done something in your younger ages and that wouldn't do any harm to your current job. But then if there is any stuff that may have happened in the past five to seven years then you need to cautious because this might affect your career.

But for instance if you are applying for a job either with the federal or state agency then here the background checks can even go further to ten to twelve years and may be more. This check is directly influenced by the importance and caliber of the job you are about to apply for. So, basically, the background checks completely depends upon the job you are about to apply. Like for instance, if you are applying for a teacher's position, then the background check may be only for last five years whereas if you are applying for a server in the hotel, then it could be somewhere around two to five years. Every company and the every position require various rounds of background checks. What can be accepted also depends upon the category of the post you have applied for and what kind of responsibilities you are undertaking.
