Everything. They look to see if you have any criminal behavior because no company wants the liability of hiring somebody that is a criminal. They look at a credit check because somebody with really bad credit is a poor risk, too. First off, they know you don't know how to handle your money and live within your means, which also tells them you would be more apt to steal from the company than someone with a good credit rating. Both are very important.

It is sad but some employers do a credit check. And if your credit is bad they won’t hire you. A criminal back ground check is used to check your criminal history. To see if you ever have been arrested or have any criminal history. Employers are not allowed to ask personal questions from your previous employer. However, a great question that employers can ask is, “Would you hire this person again?”

A background check can include any of the following:
A social security address alias trace which shows where you have lived and the names you have used.
Criminal and civil records searches, typically places you have lived within the last seven or ten years are searched.
Verification of previous employment, education, references and professional licensing information.
    Sex offender database searches.
    Credit Check
    Driving Record
Federal Criminal and Civil District Searches
    Terrorist Check
Social Security Validation to ensure that your social is valid and yours.

Not all of our clients use all of these services. Some only search criminal records. Laws vary state by state on what is legally reportable, however most records are a matter of public information. In most states both convictions and non-convictions are reported and anything no matter how old it is can be reported.
