GPS Locator
A GPS locator is a tracking device that uses the Global Positioning System to determine the precise location of a vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached. It can also store a "travel log" of where you have been.
The location of the asset can be shown against a map in real-time and can be displayed on a computer with an Internet connection.
There are three categories of GPS locator devices: data loggers, data pushers, and data pullers.
A data logger simply logs the location of the device in at regular intervals in its internal memory. The tracking log is then downloaded to a computer via a USB slot or memory card.
Private Investigators often use a data logger to track a vehicle so that they minimize the risk of being seen by having to follow a car so closely.
A data pusher GPS locator is used by government spy agencies and is the kind often seen in movies. This kind of device pushes or sends the position of the device, at regular intervals, to a server, that can analyze the data in real-time.
Some companies use data "push" technology to track a mobile workforce such as a commercial fleet. Law enforcement uses this type of GPS locator to track an arrested criminal out on bail who has to wear one on his ankle. Scientists use this type of GPS system to track an animal in the wild by putting a collar on the animal. These devices are also used by some parents to track their children.
A data puller is a GPS locator where an office sends a query or ping to the GPS device and it responds back with its location. The location data is being pulled from the GPS device on demand only. This type of GPS locator is not widely used. An example of this kind of device is a computer connected to the Internet. Various websites will ping your computer which then responds with a unique IP address that tells your location.
