Infrared Security Cameras
First developed for military use during the Korean War, an infrared camera forms an image using infrared radiation instead of using visible light like a regular camera. Regular cameras capture visible light in the 450–750 nanometer range whereas infrared cameras operate in wavelengths as long as 1,000 nm.
Human vision is limited to a tiny portion of the electromagnetic spectrum we call visible light. Enhanced spectral range infrared cameras allow the viewer to take advantage of non-visible sources of electromagnetic radiation to see at night.
Infrared cameras achieve night vision by combining infrared illumination of spectral range 700nm–1000nm – just below the visible spectrum of the human eye – with CCD cameras sensitive to this light. The result, which is dark to a human observer, appears as a monochrome image on a normal display device.

Images from infrared cameras tend to have a monochrome color because the cameras are generally designed with only a single type of sensor responding to a single wavelength range of infrared radiation.
