Cry Spy Cry!

Jovica StanisicJovica Stanisic, Milosevic's intelligence chief, is being tried for war crimes. Jovica has a bad reputation and many regard him as the brains behind the "ethnic cleansing" campaign of terror.

The trial at the Hague was not looking good for Jovica who could be sent to prison for life.

Jovica made a brilliant legal move by revealing that he was working with the CIA.

The CIA needed someone on the inside after Yugoslavia went into a civil war.

The CIA spy William Lofgren and Jovica formed a clandestine relationship in something that sounds like it came right out of a spy book.

For the next 8 years, Jovica was the CIA's main source of intel in Belgrade. In secret meetings in boats and safe houses along the Sava River, Jovica shared with William the details on the inner workings of the Milosevic administration. He provided the CIA with the locations of NATO hostages, helped the CIA find hidden grave sites, and helped the CIA set up a network of secret bases in Bosnia.

Jovica now has called in a favor from the CIA and the CIA has responded in kind.

The CIA is serving as a character witness for Jovica who is being charged with war crimes.

William, now retired from the CIA, said the CIA gave the court a document to show that this evil person also did a whole lot of good. In fact, it could be argued that without Jovica's intel, this war crimes trial would not be taking place.

The exact contents the CIA gave the court are classified and therefore were reviewed by the court in a top secret closed session.
