GPS Changes The Way You Look At Navigation

3 October 2009 No Comment

In times long ago, the first inhabitants of earth traveled around with only things that they could see as guides to bring them home. They would have used the sun, moon and stars to point the way for them. The good thing is that we don't have to rely on natural elements anymore.

The compass was a modern invention that made it possible to navigate and always be sure of our bearings, and it meant we didn't get lost anymore. A compass and a map was a sure way to find our way to whatever known place we wanted to go.

In the 21st Century, we have come so far that all these things can be rendered obsolete. The reason is that information is all saved digitally. There is something called GPS (Global Positioning System) that allows us to connect to satellites to find the exact location of places, all from the palm of your hand.

Modern luxury vehicles come equipped with GPS systems at the front of the car, making it nearly impossible to get lost on the road. It's easy to use, as all you have to do is key in or select the place you'd like to go and an electronic map shows you the route. There are also voice prompts to guide you further.

Those who have been lucky enough to experience the joys of travelling in a vehicle with GPS will be able to testify as to how simple it makes navigation. When you have a digital map in front of you with the route already set out, you can't go wrong. With voice commands, you'd have to be an idiot to get lost.

Evolution tends to make things smaller and better as we go along, and it's the same with technology. We can store more digital information in smaller and smaller pieces, meaning we get more for less. All we need now is a GPS handheld and we'll be able to navigate anywhere from a device that can fit into your pocket.

GPS devices are not only useful for finding set places. They can also be used to find other GPS devices in a certain area. If more than one person has a GPS handheld, they can track the locations of others in public places, making trips to the park or zoo with the kids more assuring knowing that you will always know where they are.

GPS will be a very valuable possession for anybody who loves the outdoors. Activities like hiking, mountaineering, off-roading or anything out in the open can be made so much more enjoyable with a GPS handheld. Whether in your car or on you at all times, you'll never get lost again.
