Police secret tape in Reece Jones murder enquiry?

13 June 2009 4 Comments

What is the procedure the police have to adhere to to secretly install a recording device in the home of young Shaun Mercer's mum's home in Liverpool and by whom do they need to get permission? This confirms to me what Ive always argued and know it is common by police and their target criminals. The murder of the black lad Steven Lawrence another example, were the camera was actually installed in a TV set. My question for anyone in the know like a copper, who gives these special operations and bugging devices the OK? and for how common do you think it is?

It's classed as intrusive surveillance (surprisingly enough) and a Chief Constable/Commissioner or his deputy has to give authority (and later justify that authority in court if necessary).

It's fairly rare for police to use it in the normal course of policing. It tends to be used when all else has failed and can only be used in very serious cases.

It's covered by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act which also gives councils the power to video your dustbin if you overfill it.

Don't get mad about it, use the technology yourself! For example, if you have a nanny that comes into your home and watches your kids while you are away, you have a right to set up a nanny spy cam. Here's a link to the cheapest spy cams sold through this blog:

It used to be the Home Secretary that gave permission, but who knows now. I beginning to wonder if they do just what they like.

They have to get permission from the person or a court and have to provide evidence that they think that a serious crime is about to take place, with mobile phones they usually get permission from the telephone company but with the latest technology they can even listen in to your conversation through your mobile when switched off if you leave the battery in , Nokia in particular. Obviously it would have to be o.k’d by a very senior officer. I think this is more common than people realise. The Police sometimes install secret camera and recording Equipment in informants homes with their permission.

I think the police should be able to get evidence by any means bugging or hidden camera`s as long as it is justified
